Cortijo Retama is a charming, romantic and cosy country cottage, located some 15 minutes’ drive from Frigiliana off the country road along a surfaced track with spectacular views to the mountains and the coast. Set on a hillside, in its own large tract of land, the house is surrounded by old olive trees and, although recently built, looks ancient! Entering the property through a large, rustic wooden gate, there is a pretty pathway through the garden to the house, with its handsome front door off the covered terrace outside. A rustic dining table and chairs furnish this outdoor terrace, in an ideal position for enjoying every meal of the day, as the house gets the sun all day and the views down the valley and to the hills in the west are marvellous.

The 2 bedrooms, 1 double, 1 single, are simple, colourful and comfortable with good cross ventilation through the traditional shuttered windows which are thoughtfully fitted with mosquito netting. There is a well appointed, attractive shower bathroom between the two bedrooms.

The cute, galley-sized kitchen has a double sink and modern appliances – electric cooker, electric oven, microwave, fridge and toaster, juicer, beater etc. It is decorated with pretty hand made tiles, an antique plate rack and the local carpenter has even made the new drawers and cupboards to look ancient. Between the kitchen and the sitting room is an entrance hall, which is also used as an indoor dining area. The sitting room has a comfortable wrap-around sofa, TV and music centre and a log-burning stove for winter warmth. Throughout the ceilings have been made in the traditional manner, with cane and beams, and are painted snowy white: all the windows have shutters and curtains. Everywhere the owners’ personal and original touch of care and attention to detail is evident.

The laundry room is in a separate building and has a sink, a further large fridge / freezer and a chest deep freeze, as well as an ironing table, ironing board and iron. The garden has stone-walled beds full of flowers, shrubs, climbers and vines. Steps lead from the shaded terrace, with its lovely old wooden table, to the pool on the terrace below. The pool looks inviting, with blue mosaic, and has a stone surround like an old water well. There is a built in BBQ, with sink in the traditional manner, beside one of the garden paths. The house, which gets the sun all day, is in utterly peaceful surroundings: although there are neighbours nearby it is not isolated or remote, yet one certainly feels far away from it all and at peace with the world!
